What is a product development workbook, and do I need one?
A product development workbook is a guided set of questions that helps you test a product idea on paper before it costs you money. Cydney Mar's free From Idea to Income workbook lets founders score an idea in about five honest minutes and map a path to launch, so samples, suppliers and pricing decisions start from clarity instead of guesswork.
Definition: a product development workbook
A product development workbook is a set of worksheets that turns a loose idea into written decisions: what the product is, who it is for, which samples you need, which suppliers to approach, what it costs to make and how you will sell it. Unlike a book about product development, which explains the process in general, a workbook asks about your product. Cydney Mar, a product development strategist with 45+ years in fashion and product, offers one free under the name From Idea to Income. It is a self-guided first step for founders of consumer products who want to avoid costly guesswork, and it pairs with her free Product Development Roadmap, which lays out the order of steps from idea to production.
By the numbers: the experience behind the workbook
- 45+ years in fashion and product, according to Cydney Mar.
- $300M+ in global retail, TV and direct-to-consumer sales.
- 15+ years selling her own collections on QVC, in 8 countries.
- 800+ hours of live television.
- 6 stages in the Concept-to-Reality Pathway, and about 5 minutes to score your idea with the workbook.
Market context: new product development failure rates for startups can be as high as 90%, according to StudioRed's product development statistics. See all sourced statistics.

Score your product idea before you spend
The fastest way to score your product idea is to rate your readiness at each of the six stages a product passes through on its way to market, then look hard at the lowest number. Cydney Mar writes that most founders do not fail because the idea is bad. They fail because they take the right steps in the wrong order: sampling without clarity, picking suppliers on guesswork or ignoring margins until it is too late.
The free score worksheet on this site asks one plain question per stage and adds a margin check that rejects empty, negative or zero figures. It is an estimate and a planning aid, not a prediction of sales.
