The Concept-to-Reality Pathway

Last updated: November 2026

What are the stages of developing a new product?

In Cydney Mar's Concept-to-Reality Pathway, a new product moves through six stages: Product Clarity, Right Prototypes, The Right Suppliers, Cost and Margins, Production-Ready, and Launch and Scale. She describes it as a path from idea to a product on the shelf, where every step moves you closer to market rather than into costly rework.

Part of the free product development workbook guide.

The six stages, in order

  1. Stage 1

    Product Clarity

Define what you're making, and who it's for.

Ask yourself: Can you describe the product, the customer and the problem it solves in two sentences?

  2. Stage 2

    Right Prototypes

Develop the right samples and cut costly rework.

Ask yourself: Do you know which samples you need and what each one must prove?

  3. Stage 3

    The Right Suppliers

Vetted for quality, communication, and reliability.

Ask yourself: Have you found suppliers you have checked for quality, communication and reliability?

  4. Stage 4

    Cost & Margins

Build for real profit and scalability, learn to calculate costs properly.

Ask yourself: Do you know your unit cost and the price that leaves you a real margin?

  5. Stage 5

    Production-Ready

Finalize specs and systems for consistent manufacturing.

Ask yourself: Are your specifications and tech pack final enough for consistent manufacturing?

  6. Stage 6

    Launch & Scale

Take your product to market (retail, DTC, or TV) and grow.

Ask yourself: Do you know which channel you will launch in first: retail, direct-to-consumer or TV?

Why does the order of the stages matter?

Order matters because each stage depends on decisions made in the one before. Cydney Mar writes that most founders do not fail because their idea is bad; they fail because they take the right steps in the wrong order. Sampling before the product is clearly defined leads to the wrong samples. Choosing a supplier before you know your costs can lock you into a margin that does not work.

Definition: a product launch framework

A product launch framework is a repeatable sequence of decisions that takes a product from idea to first sales. The Concept-to-Reality Pathway is Cydney Mar's version for consumer products. It ends with Launch and Scale, taking a product to market through retail, direct-to-consumer or TV, and it rests on five earlier stages so that launch begins with a finished, costed and production-ready product. Her program page also describes a five-stage version for founders going from idea to first sales, starting with Clarify: locking down the problem, the customer and the product. The same steps apply whether you are putting a product on a shelf or packaging your expertise into a program or service.

Where the Pathway comes from

Cydney Mar began her first company in 1980. She was an award-winning designer in New York in the late 1970s, designed Cirque du Soleil's first Boutique Collection and led design for Edwin Jeans in North America. For more than 15 years she sold her own collections on QVC in 8 countries, with more than 800 hours of live television and over $300 million in retail, TV and direct-to-consumer sales. She has created fashion, jewelry, bath bombs, scented candles, homewares, paper products, car accessories and vitamins. The Pathway packages that experience for founders of consumer products.

What does a product development strategist do at each stage?

Cydney Mar works across three areas that map onto the Pathway. Founders can get help with one stage or the whole route. Prices are not published on this site; ask through the contact page on cydneymar.com.

Business strategy

Business plans and cost structures strong enough for grant and funding applications, diagnostics to find where a business is leaking opportunity, and guidance on what to build next.

Positioning and path to market

Pricing, offer design and a clear plan to reach your first, and next, hundred buyers.

What is the Concept-to-Reality Pathway?
The Concept-to-Reality Pathway is the step-by-step method Cydney Mar uses to take a product from idea to shelf. It has six stages: Product Clarity, Right Prototypes, The Right Suppliers, Cost and Margins, Production-Ready, and Launch and Scale. Each stage is meant to move the product closer to market. More in the FAQ
Why does the order of product development steps matter?
Steps taken in the wrong order cost time and money. Cydney Mar writes that most founders do not fail because the idea is bad, but because they take the right steps in the wrong order, such as choosing suppliers on guesswork or ignoring margins until it is too late. The Pathway puts clarity and costing before production. More in the FAQ
Is there a product launch framework I can follow?
Yes. The final stage of the Concept-to-Reality Pathway, Launch and Scale, covers taking your product to market through retail, direct-to-consumer or TV, and growing from there. It rests on the five earlier stages, so a launch plan is built on a finished, costed and production-ready product. More in the FAQ
What is a product development strategy?
A product development strategy is the plan for what you will make, for whom, at what cost and price, with which suppliers, and how you will bring it to market. Cydney Mar covers this through product development, business strategy, and positioning and path to market, including pricing, offer design and a plan to reach your first hundred buyers. More in the FAQ
Can the Pathway help me build a minimum viable product?
Yes, if your product is a physical consumer product. The early stages of the Pathway, Product Clarity and Right Prototypes, are about defining what you are making and developing the right samples first, which is the heart of a first viable version. Cydney Mar also helps founders create a first mini collection before a full collection. More in the FAQ
How long does it take to go from idea to product?
Timelines are not published on this site and they vary by product, supplier and sampling rounds. What raises the timeline most is rework, which is why the Pathway focuses on getting the right prototypes and a clear tech pack early. Ask Cydney Mar about your specific product through the contact page on cydneymar.com. More in the FAQ
